You’ve gone through and renamed everything. Fine! Your numbers mean absolutely nothing. Ok! You have AMG models that don’t have AMG engines.* Whatever! I have turned off my brain and now just say, “as long as you are consistent, I’ll deal.” However, I really wish you guys would call the CLS what it is. It’s a CLE...
*Oh, I have plenty more to say about this, but I’ll save it for another post.
Mercedes and all other automakers, I dont care what you call your products because once I own it it’s name becomes, “my car.” All I want is for consistency that way I can at least guess what a vehicle is when I hear the name. If I care, I’ll learn it, if not then I’m happy the names are forgettable.

Psh. CLS sounds way cooler. E is a wimpy letter for luxury cars.

CLS has heritage. It's the OG of this incredibly confusing 4 Door Coupe thing.

I don’t know, “E” is becoming as important as "i" (lowercase, not that worthless capital “I” which no one wants on anything)!

Is it me? Or do these cars look the same, or is it because they are both red?

I’m not sure two generations is enough to create heritage for me personally. Plus I’m not sure that argument holds up anymore seeing as the ML couldn’t be saved. (Im suprised they didn’t use ML for the Crossovers and GL for the less partical versions).

S Class, E Class, C Class, CL (?) Class, I agree - put a letter or two and the engine size. I had a 300D, and was never confused about what it was. And yeah - AMG should mean something other than wheels and badges. And say what you want about BMW, but the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and shit SUV series are at least on a consistent naming scheme.

It works for electric cars because it’s the only one that works for electric cars. The existing E-Class should be the L-Class. It is just a slightly scaled-down S-Class, so that works better IMO.

The day that the ML was renamed the GLE was a sad one. An even better car, but still sad.

All cars just look alike. Like toasters, washers, refrigerators. Things that do the same thing as another thing will look the same as that other thing that does the same thing the thing does.

I’m just not clearly understanding this and I can’t be bothered to look it up: is the CLS closer to the E-Class in chassis, engine, or both?
Given their nomenclature I would expect a CLS to be a swoopy version of the S-Class. All the comfort, all the power, but sleeker roofline (which probably compromises rear headroom comfort).
Full disclosure: the CLS AMGs I’ve seen on the road look great. A bit ostentatious with all the vents and flares and shit but I think it’s what a performance version of a sedan should strive for: enthusiasts will notice the difference but the regular person will just see another fancy Merc.

That’s exactly why it should be the CLE, to avoid that confusion (though Mercedes wants people to think S-Class when ever they see CLS or GLS). The CLS is an E class like how the 6-series is based off of the 5-series and the A7 came from the A6. The thing about these coupes are that they are longer, wider, sportier, and better equipped than their midsized sedan parents, hence why they all receive a designation above the parent sedan but below the sedan above it.

YES! THANK YOU!!! I would love to see a real CLS (S class based) and while they are at it SLE-class anyone?

That's a fair point I suppose. CLE doesn't sound as good though. These are just facts.

The CLS was the 4 door version of the CL (which was discontinued for the S coupe) but it still sells really well with the facelifts so they’ve kept it.
They are supposedly already working on a CLE because the A5 sportback is coming to America in 2017 but it will be placed below the redesigned CLS to complete the CLA>CLE>CLS nomenclature. Which makes sense because the CLS is in a different price market and league than the 4 series GC and the A5 Sportback, those cars are like 15k less than the CLS.
I can see the redesigned CLS being a “gran coupe” version of the S coupe.

All generations of the CLS, including the upcoming third generation, have been based off the E-Class. I think the E-Class Coupe is based off the C-Class and throws everything off. The A5 Sportback/4-Series GC competitor would be the CLK = CLC.
You raise a great point! The different views on where these cars sit is understandable. I guess for it to be an S-Class comparative vehicle, the CLS would need to go against the Rapide S much like the Panamera Turbo S/Exclusive Series does. I’ll have to make a post addressing my criticisms since it’s a bit much for a reply.

Yeah the way the platforms were before made it this way but the new E coupe will finally be on the new E platform and strongly believe the redesigned CLS will be on the new S platform with the CLE slotting just below it but who knows. MB is also working on an All Terrain E class to battle the All Road so let's see what their line up looks like.
